Though there are many ways to approach the teaching of set works, it’s often the case that we stop once we feel students understand the work (well, once we feel they’re ready to take the examination). The works are chosen, however, because they have significant musical value, and, as such, we have a great opportunity to use them as springboards to develop students’ musical understanding.
