Innovative practice in community music-making is the theme of a conference to be held in Leeds this weekend.
Community Music Now is suitable for both emerging and experienced practitioners and researchers, and presents opportunities to connect, share, celebrate and learn from each other.
The event will showcase diversity in music-making, including sessions on Manasamitra, an artist-led organisation; Bhangra dance led by Hardeep Sahota; Sounds Better CIC, with practical ways of working musically with intergenerational groups and also people with dementia; Cohesive Harmonies, exploring the relationship between music and social cohesion; re-imagining film scores through Collaborative Audiovisual Composition, with Joanna Gawthorpe; and Liquid Listening with Lawrence Bradshaw.
Practical careers sessions include mentoring skills, being self-employed, and applying for funding. Brass Bands England and Shepherd Brass Band explore the role of brass bands in engaging local communities.
Community Music Now is promoted by Sound Sense, Leeds Beckett University and AMP. It takes place at Leeds School of Arts; further information and tickets £10-£90 are here.
