Accredited by Trinity College, London, the Inclusive Practitioner Certificate of Music Education (CME) is a comprehensive training programme leading to a professional, Level 4 qualification.
The course is open to anyone involved in music, such as class teachers, peripatetics, and community musicians working with young people. Students undergo a year of face-to-face and online training, with additional support sessions, coursework, and assessment feedback. They will have 1:1 mentor sessions with experienced practitioners, and the opportunity to visit other practitioners’ sessions, developing practical skills alongside learning theory around inclusive music practice. They will also be visited twice in a place of their work to give the opportunity to reflect on and hone their practice.
The CME was launched as a pilot in 2017, since when 22 people have gained the qualification. The next course will run from September 2025 to July 2026.
Bristol Beacon also runs a series of Inclusive Practitioner individual CPD courses (starting autumn 2024), on topics including Young People and Their Musical Worlds, Safeguarding and Music Practice, and Diversity and Inclusion.
The fee for the Inclusive Practitioner CME qualification is £1,545; individual training sessions cost £30 (for individuals and freelancers) or £40 (for organisations). A limited number of bursary places are available.
