Experienced or novice songwriters from around the world can enter one of six categories, based on age. The top 30 songs selected are announced on 28 May and the top 10 on 25 June, leading to a residential summer songwriting camp hosted by the Song Academy in Guildford, UK.
The prizes include recording sessions in London, Yamaha instruments worth up to £1,000 and the chance to have songs uploaded to Amazing Radio. The SAYS24 live showcase takes place on 21 September 2024, London, when the winners will be announced.
Last year’s finalist, Sam, said about the awards: ‘I like how it is focused on songwriting and not vocal or instrumental talent, especially in this day and age, where that’s a critical factor for success. If you can write a hit, it’s arguably more impressive than if you can sing one, and I think this competition shows that.’
Contestants will be judged on lyrics, melody and chords and instrumental content. Previous judges have included the likes of Calum Scott, Tom Grennan, Tom Odell and Imogen Heap.
‘This competition is so important. It not only showcases young talent, it gives it an opportunity to be heard by the music industry, from a young age. I’m very confident that the future of music is in some of the songwriters I’ve listened to,’ said previous judge Amy Wadge.
The Song Academy provides songwriting tips and resources, workshops, mentoring programmes and summer camps to help young musicians develop their skills.
