Tech Reviews: New products (July 2018)

We round up the latest in music tech.

Moog Grandmother

Price: $999.00 (£879)

There is a retro theme to all the products this month, starting with the Moog Grandmother, which features a semi-modular interface that can either be used on its own or, via patch cables and other synths, as part of a bigger system. A bit pricey for most schools but an affordable equivalent is likely to follow.

VocalSynth 2

Price: TBC

This is the latest update from one of the best designers of warped effects and plugins. VocalSynth 2 is designed to manipulate sound, particularly the human voice, to create new sounds and textures. It also features a very good vocoder and talk box for those retro robotic voices.

Combining the electronic-music inspired SuperSaw with the 80s sound of FM synthesis, SONIVOX's Stratum combines retro with modern to create pretty much any sound you could imagine. Well equipped with other synth elements, it is a good all-rounder for synth work with students.

DAW Cassette

Price: $39.99 (£35)

A rather esoteric plugin that recreates the sound of cassette recordings. If you find yourself longing for those audio imperfections, then Klevgrand's latest plugin is for you. Featuring controls to adjust the amount of noise, it can make anything sound like a Walkman. Can I get a rewind?
