Roland VMH-S100 Headphones

Price: £285

These new headphones from Roland were made with input from V-Moda. They are marketed as a set of mixing headphones, as they provide an accurate sound profile without exaggerated frequencies in the high and low end. They are constructed ergonomically, with the possibility of inserting the wire into either the left or right side. Teachers will be pleased to know that the headphone pads are replaceable, prolonging the life of the headphones after classroom wear and tear. ROLI Piano and Airwave

Price: £548

The ROLI piano is the bigger and brighter version of the Lumikeys. It features extensive control over dynamics, vibrato, glide and polyphonic aftertouch – all with finger on the keys – so the student doesn't have to fiddle with sliders and wheels to control external parameters. The Airwave is a new hand-tracking MIDI controller which provides six dimensions of sound manipulation, all based on hand gestures after a note or chord has been played on the keyboard. It's an incredibly intuitive and accessible way for students to manipulate their sound in real time. The Piano + Airwave bundle is currently available for pre-order but won't be shipping until later in the year.

Divisimate 2 and Divisimate Micro

Price: £200, £40 (Micro)

Divisimate provides an easy and intuitive way to split MIDI information into individual voices which are sent to different tracks – for processing separately. Divisimate can be used to record in real time or can orchestrate from pre-entered chordal MIDI information. It is also responsive to expression and volume automation, mapped in from MIDI.

Divisimate 2 offers up to 512 instruments, whereas Divisimate Micro offers up to 4. For students getting to grips with orchestration, Divisimate Micro is a great way to streamline the process as it is not overwhelming. For the more advanced students, Divisimate 2 might be worth the steeper learning curve. For example, if you're doing an arrangement exercise with GCSE or A Level students, you could have them play chords on a MIDI keyboard and the harmony will be sent directly to the section that they're arranging (strings, brass, wind etc.). Students can experiment with different voicings in real time and then combine different instrument groups.
