Though it developed out of binary form, sonata form is more like ternary form in the way that it presents thematic material, so a review of last month’s resource would be helpful to support students’ understanding of how these structures are linked. In the Classical period, sonata form became the common form for the first movements of symphonies, sonatas and string quartets, and later, other genres such as overtures and symphonic poems were also structured this way.
